Comments — What We Collect and Why

  • When you comment, we collect the data you enter, plus your IP address and browser user-agent to help detect spam.

  • We may send an anonymized hash of your email to Gravatar to check if you use the service. Gravatar’s policy: https://automattic.com/privacy/

  • After approval, your profile image may appear next to your comment.

Media Uploads — EXIF/GPS Reminder

  • If you upload images, avoid files with EXIF GPS data. Visitors can download images and extract location data.

Cookies — How We Use Them

Comment convenience. If you comment, you can save your name, email, and site in cookies so you don’t re-enter them next time. These last 1 year.
Login test. Visiting the login page sets a temporary cookie to check if your browser accepts cookies. It has no personal data and is deleted when you close the browser.
Login/session. When you sign in, we set cookies for login and display preferences. Login cookies last 2 days; screen options last 1 year. If you choose “Remember Me,” your login stays for 2 weeks. Logging out removes login cookies.
Editor cookie. Editing or publishing an article sets an extra cookie with the post ID you edited. It holds no personal data and expires after 1 day.

Embedded Content — Third-Party Services

  • Articles may include embedded content (videos, images, posts).

  • Embedded content from other sites acts as if you visited those sites. They may collect data, use cookies, run third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction—especially if you’re logged in there.

Who We Share Your Data With — Security Only

  • If you request a password reset, your IP address may be included in the reset email to help prevent fraud.

How Long We Keep Your Data — Retention

  • Comments: We keep comments and their metadata indefinitely to recognize and auto-approve follow-ups.

  • User accounts (if enabled): We store profile information you add. You can view, edit, or delete your personal info at any time (except your username). Site admins can also see and edit that information.

Your Rights — Access and Deletion

If you have an account or have left comments, you can request:

  • An exported file of your personal data we hold (including data you provided).

  • Deletion of your personal data. This doesn’t include data we must keep for administrative, legal, or security reasons.

Where Your Data Is Sent — Spam Protection

  • Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
